The Confucius Institute jointly built by Jinan University and Rhodes University in South Africa is selected as a national model institute and obtains the special funds of 1 million USD.
LIU, Yandong, Chinese State Councilor and Chairwoman of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters announced the official launch of “Model Confucius Institutes Project” on the fourth Confucius Institute Conference of 2009 in order to promote the development of oversea Chinese teaching. By the end of 2012, Hanban/ Confucius Institute Headquarters had founded 8 Model Confucius Institutes. In 2013, three more was added to the list, which include Jinan-Rhodes Confucius Institute.
Professor MA, Yue, Dean of Chinese side of Jinan-Rhodes Confucius Institute dispatched by Jinan University, also the External Supervisor of two universities in South Africa and Department of Chinese Language in University of Zimbabwe, made a positive influence in the curriculum, teaching materials and assessment of Chinese teaching in these universities. Jinan-Rhodes Confucius Institute has also promoted Chinese language and Chinese culture in the local middle schools and taken the advantage of the culture center of the Confucius Institute to popularize Chinese culture in the local community, which is appreciated by the local people.
In the future, Jinan-Rhodes Confucius Institute will consecutively improve its disciplines system to establish a system based on Chinese undergraduate research degree programs and honorary degree programs and finally become a Sinology Discipline Base in Southern-Africa which is master degree-focused and PhD degree-focused.
